On the day when India celebrates Chhoti Diwali, dogs in Nepal are worshipped in what is called the Kukur Tihar. . . . The day celebrates the special bond between humans and dogs. . . .
On Tihar's second day, dogs (both pets and strays) are decked with garlands and tika (a red paste of abir and water) is applied on their forehead. It is done to show them respect and honour their presence. The red tika is meant to recognise the dog as a devotee of the the righteous path as well as an object of devotion.
